FREDA Women: Katelyn Tarver

Please share who you are and what you do professionally?

Hi, I’m Katelyn Tarver! I’m originally from a tiny town in south Georgia but moved to LA to pursue a career in entertainment about 10 years ago. I’m a singer/songwriter and actor.

What are you most proud of?

This is hard! Really putting my self-love to the test. I guess I’d say I’m proud of the relationships I have in my life. I feel like I make a point to invest in my friendships and family and marriage, and it is really rewarding. I’m proud of a lot of my career accomplishments, but at the end of the day, I know that my real life and the people I spend my days with are what I care about the most. So, I’m proud of the work I put into keeping them healthy.

What are you reading right now?

I just got done reading (well, listening to) “Maybe You Should Talk to Someone” by Lori Gottlieb, and I highly recommend it! The author is a therapist and it’s all about humans and self-discovery and well, there’s probably a better bio written about it somewhere on the internet so just google it. If you’re into that kind of stuff, I think you’ll love it.

 What are you listening to?

Sasha Sloan, Maisie Peters, The Japanese House, Wrabel, Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard.

Describe your personal style.  Do you have a certain look that is your go-to?

I’d say it’s pretty California casual. Very much a jeans and t-shirt girl.. then add a blazer at night. I love all my white sneakers, but lately, my FREDA boots have been winning out!

Where do you find inspiration and how do you stay inspired?

I’m just always trying to pay attention and stay connected to myself and my surroundings. Lately, a lot of my inspiration for my music has been me grappling with my own fear and anxieties and unmet expectations and change and just all the fun, breezy stuff that comes with being in your late 20’s (lol). I’m trying to channel it all into my music and hoping people connect with it.

When do you feel most creative? Do you have a morning ritual?

I feel most creative when I’m with my closest collaborators and bouncing ideas off of each other. I’m very much a communal, extroverted, verbal processor, so it’s helpful to be able to get stuff out of my head and work out how I feel with people I trust. Which usually ends up becoming a song or at least getting the ball rolling for one. I don’t have a morning ritual. I’m pretty bad about sitting and scrolling through my phone first thing in the morning to help me wake up. And then before I know it, it’s been like an hour and I was supposed to go work out. It’s bad! I eventually get up and have coffee and do something! Wait, maybe I do have a morning ritual?

How do you define success?

By how much I can not define myself by it.
