FRĒDA WOMAN SERIES: AYCA KILICOGLU

We’re so excited to welcome you into the very colorful world of Ayca Kilicoglu! She’s a designer, illustrator and the creative mind behind the hand-drawn, mood-boosting silk scarves and bandanas at her brand Mür by Ayca. The second we saw her playful approach to color and print, we were obsessed and were beyond thrilled when she wanted to partner with us. Read on for all things Ayca.

TELL US ABOUT YOU.

I am a designer, illustrator, and the creative force behind the brand Mür by Ayca. My journey into the world of design wasn’t a straight path, but it was a heartfelt one.

I studied public administration and worked in economics for a few years back in Turkey. My life was pretty much headed in that direction, and I don’t think anyone expected me to quit my job, leave everything behind, and move to another country. But deep down, I always knew creativity was where my heart truly belonged.

I had to trust myself and go against the grain, but it’s been incredibly fulfilling to follow my passion and bring my artistic vision to life. I also have to thank my husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, for always supporting me and giving me the courage to follow my dreams. He was already in San Francisco, studying when I made the move.

After relocating, I studied in the Graphic Design Program at UC Berkeley and then earned my Master’s degree in Graphic Design from the Academy of Art University. After graduating, I had the privilege of teaching design at UC Berkeley.

My artistic roots run deep. I grew up in a household surrounded by creativity. My family’s influence, along with my natural love for drawing and textiles, has always fueled my imagination. I founded Mür by Ayca as an art brand focused on spreading joy through my hand illustrated designs. With bold, whimsical patterns and vibrant colors, my work aims to infuse joy into people’s lives, making the world a little brighter, one piece at a time.

WE LOVE YOUR WORK, WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION?

Thank you so much, that means a lot to hear from you! My inspiration comes from a mix of my cultural background, Mediterranean roots, everyday life, and nature. I find beauty in simple moments, whether it’s walking through my favorite neighborhood, noticing little details along the way, or spending time in a bookshop. Traveling and reading also spark so many ideas for me. It’s often the small, unexpected things that ignite my creativity and find their way into my work.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

I’d describe my style as vibrant, playful, and full of life. I love creating designs that spark joy and invite people into a world of color and pattern. I hand draw, paint and I also use digital programs, lately, I’ve been using Procreate quite a bit! I enjoy creating pieces that feel both fresh and timeless, something people can connect with and love for years to come.

HOW DO YOU THINK COLOR AFFECTS YOUR MOOD?

Color and patterns have always been so important to me, even from a young age. I was always particular about what I wore, and I remember a Turkish brand called SÜmerbank, known for its incredible textile patterns, which I still love. Unfortunately, they no longer exist. At the time, I didn’t know what it was that drew me to their designs, but now I realize it was my passion for color and pattern.

Color is such a powerful tool for me, it has the ability to completely shift my mood. I’ve always been drawn to vibrant hues and bold patterns because they bring a sense of joy and energy. Color creates an emotional connection and can instantly change how we feel. When I work, I aim to use color to reflect that whether it’s a pop of bold color to evoke excitement or a softer, warmer tone for comfort. It’s about creating a feeling and an experience for the viewer. For me, color is a form of self expression that taps into the heart of who I am.

HOW DO YOU BUILD COMMUNITY?

As a small brand and SF Bay artist, I’m lucky to have a direct connection with the people who support my work. I keep it personal, whether it’s through thoughtful conversations on social media, emails, meeting customers at local markets, or collaborating with other creatives. I love sharing not just my products, but the stories and process behind them. That openness creates real connections. It’s about building a space where people feel included and part of something joyful and authentic.

WHAT WOULD WE BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?

It might not be shocking, but people are often surprised to hear that while I’m creating colorful, playful designs, I’m often watching crime documentaries!

WHAT DO YOU GET UP TO OUTSIDE WORK?

I love organizing my space and home, it helps me clear my head and recharge. I find a lot of peace in spending time alone, whether it’s visiting my favorite bookstore, going for walks with Miço, and my husband or enjoying a dinner setup with friends. Shopping also gives me a little burst of excitement, especially when I come across something new and inspiring.

WHAT’S YOUR MANTRA?

My mantra is “Live with Joy,” is my brand motto but also involves my mantra which I believe that what comes around goes around. When you approach life with positivity and kindness, it creates a ripple effect, spreading good energy and connection. It’s about embracing the little moments and being open to what the world has to offer. I try to keep this mindset in both my work and personal life, knowing that the joy and good vibes we put out will come back in unexpected ways.

WHAT IN YOUR CLOSET MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD?

I love layering clothes. It’s something that grew on me over time, probably because of the SF weather. Now, it’s one of my favorite ways to dress, it’s fun and makes me feel both stylish and comfortable. I love wearing dresses, skirts, boyfriend jeans, cozy sweaters. And when it comes to shoes, my FRĒDA BROOKE boots are always my go-to. They’re incredibly comfy and effortlessly chic. I can wear them every day and everywhere!
